What Is First Robotics Competition?

FIRST® Robotics Competition is designed for youths grades 9-12 and combines the excitement of sports with the rigor of science and technology. With strict rules, limited resources and time, students are tasked with the challenge of creating an industrial-size robot to compete; they must build and program the robot to compete and cooperate with other teams.

FRC teams can be formed in schools or other youth-based organizations and are led by two or more adult mentors to help educate and guide the students in the challenge they’ve been given, raising funds, designing and maintaining the team brand, and working with their community to earn specific awards.

Each year, FIRST® provides teams with a new challenge that focuses on real-world issues that scientists and engineers are facing today. They have six weeks to plan, design, build, and program a robot to compete with and against other teams and their robots.

Volunteers and teachers are the lifeblood of the program – they make it happen. Volunteering with FIRST® Washington is a great way to impact today’s youth in a new and exciting way, and there is a unique role for every person.

FRC is preparing youth to be the future leaders of the STEM field by approaching robotics as a team sport rather than a classroom subject. Our goal is to make learning fun and ignite a passion for discovery and creativity. It provides students with a “real-world” environment to learn new skills and improve on existing skills.

What Is First® Washington?

FIRST Washington supports and engages today's tech-native youth with a league of their own, inspiring them to build on their passions and preparing them to be the STEM leaders of tomorrow.

Creating. Theorizing. Tinkering. Testing. Expanding their worlds. Getting their hands dirty.

FIRST Washington ignites youthful minds through education, hard work, mentorship, and healthy competition.

Just as important, participants are integrated into a fun, team-based learning environment created to encourage their interests, teach the benefits of collaboration, boost self-confidence - and illuminate the exciting world of STEM study and careers.

At FIRST Washington, we sum it up this way:

What's going to be happening next in STEM is happening here.

FIRST.
